Why Are People Choosing Us?
I have separated the three categories below for practical purposes, but do acknowledge these identities are not isolated or independent from one another. Rather, I encourage a critical praxis that recognizes the overlap and interplay amongst the three categories, engaging with both theory and practice.
Academics
If you are a scholar or interested in the theory behind this project, please click here to learn more about the Ngecha artists as human rights actors in their community. The artists translate messages of human rights into the vernacular for community members yet I argue that they constitute a new group of translators even more closely connected to the grassroots that has not yet been addressed. The Ngecha artists do not claim an identity of "activist" but rather one of "artist" and challenge assumptions of transcendental human rights by engaging with culture through art.
Practitioners
For practitioners, such as those involved in NGO, government, or non-profit work, please click here to learn more about the partnership aspect of this project. Art can often be a catalyst for change. Inspired by the Ngecha Artists Association's vision for their community, a partnership was born between Ngecha and UW Seattle students. This partnership journey includes a collaborative international art show, website training, and fiscal sponsorship.
Artists
If you are an artist or interested in how art can inspire social change, please click here to visit the Gallery. Art is a powerful language and one that has an important role in the human rights movement. In the Gallery, you can view pieces and their content analysis to learn more about how Kenyan artists are engaging with art to foster human rights' dialogue.
